A few days ago I was in Winthrop Washington and spent some time at the Glassworks of Winthrop. Artist Garth Mudge has a nice setup with half of his shop as a gallery and the other half a working glass blowing workshop. You can safely watch him create his pieces behind a glass window. Of course I had to ask if he would let me in his workshop to shoot but he said “no, to many things flying around”. He did set me up with a opening to shoot some of these through. The furnace is at a red hot 2,100˚ F! After the piece is done it cools overnight in a oven that starts at 900˚F. Garth is a very nice guy and makes every person that walks into his shop feel special and welcome. I had a great time watching and photographing him.

Thank you for posting these beautiful photographs. My wife and I remember Garth when he had a shop in a Colorado tourist town up in the mountains. We were a little surprised that he moved to Washington, but I guess he’s happy there. His new place reminds me a lot of his old one. Thanks again for taking photos of his work that are much better than anything that I ever took.
Wonderful photos of Garth and his work. My new friend Michael Masny has spoken so highly of Garth and his openess to share his craft. Infact he and his son, Nick used to visit Garth when he had his studio and gallery in Estes Park, CO.over several years, made an impression on Michael. We were up in Estes recently and popped by the glass gallery where he used to work and a very nice man opened the door to talk with us for a moment even though he was closed. I thought I would take it upon myself to locate this fine craftsperson and possibly surprise Michael with a trip to Washington for his 60th birthday…….we’ll see where the adventure takes us. Thank you for posting these photos, Sincerely, Adrienne
Thanks so much for posting these pictures. Growing up, my family and I discovered Garth’s shop in Estes Park, Colorado, and made a trip there every summer. My parents still have quite a few custom glass pieces that he created for them all throughout their house. His new shop looks surprisingly like his old one, and he doesn’t look much different, though the last time we saw him was probably 7 years ago! Thanks again…Katy
